The popular orange fizzy drink is on sale throughout the SEC convention centre in Glasgow because of a deal between the building’s owners and drinks manufacturer AG Barr. The outspoken Democrat – widely seen as a radical in the US – arrived at the climate summit of world leaders on Tuesday and quickly posted on Instagram to say she wanted to try the drink sold in thousands of shops throughout the UK. Responding to a question over whether she had sampled Irn-Bru, Ms Ocasio-Cortez replied: “I am trying to get my hands on some!

“So far it’s been nonstop work with no real independent time so I am hoping for a window to find some.

“The schedule has us leave early and get back late.

“Where do I find it? Do y’all have bodegas here?”

On Wednesday, she accomplished her mission, with Scotland’s First Minister Ms Sturgeon posting a picture on Twitter of her presenting the US Congresswoman with a can of Irn-Bru.

The SNP leader tweeted alongside this: “Amidst all the serious business at #COP26 today, I’m pleased to also report that @AOC now has a supply of Irn Bru.”

Ms Ocasio-Cortez replied: “Talk about Scottish hospitality!

“Thank you for the (very special) delivery, Madam First Minister @NicolaSturgeon – and for taking the time to speak with us today.”

But the excruciating stunt from Ms Sturgeon sparked a furious response from many on Twitter.

Reading Woody (@STEVEWOODMAN1) replied: “Is there anyone that you won’t have a selfie with for your own gratification?”

Twitter user the original Grumpy Git (@GitGrumpygit) said: “But tell us @NicolaSturgeon did you manage to sort the NHS crisis?

“You know the shortage of nurses, GPs, hospital beds, ambulances etc or were you to busy looking for selfies?”

Fellow Twitter user fmp (@frangers82) simply commented: “This is an embarrassing photo.”

After being presented with her first can of Irn-Bru, US Congresswoman Ms Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: “I finally got a hold of some Irn-Bru at #COP26.”

In an Instagram video of herself trying the popular drink for the first time, she beamed: “Oh my God, love it, love it.

“This tastes just like the Latino soda Kola Champagne.”

In the caption accompanying the Instagram video, she wrote: “Moment of truth for Irn Bru.

“For those not fully caught up, I have been in Scotland for #COP26 and sharing my thoughts and behind the scenes in my stories.

“Irn Bru is a very popular drink here that I have been trying to get a hold of and finally did today.”

Ms Ocasio-Cortez continued: “Upon further tasting, it’s not EXACTLY like Kola Champagne (or Inca Kola) but it’s in a similar family of flavour.

“I was so shocked at having something in Glasgow that tasted like HOME. However Irn Bru is also very unique on its own.

“It’s got pizazz. I like it! Will bring some cans home to NY for sure! Cheers.”
