Home Secretary Priti Patel has demanded that Emmanuel Macron and the European Commission take greater action to support the resettlement of Afghan refugees. Speaking to Kay Burley on Sky News, Ms Patel said the UK Government was creating new humanitarian corridors to offer a safe route out of Afghanistan for those looking to flee Taliban rule. Ms Patel said the EU Commission and members states could be doing “much more” to aid Afghan migrants.

Ms Patel: There is a crisis there is a humanitarian crisis.

“The United Kingdom is creating new humanitarian routes to ensure that we can save lives and protect people.

“Within Europe, there is so much more that the EU Commission can do and could do in terms of stopping irregular migration and creating safe and legal routes.

“To be frank I have also been talking to and persuading other EU states over recent months to effectively tell them to do much more on the humanitarian side.”

It comes after  Emmanuel Macron stressed the need for the EU to adopt new strategies to clamp down on migration flows from Afghanistan.

The French President said: “We must anticipate and protect ourselves against major irregular migratory flows that would endanger those who use them and feed trafficking of all kinds.”

Mr Macron added: “Europe alone cannot bear the consequences of the current situation.”

He said the EU migrant scheme would “fight against irregular flows, solidarity in the effort, the harmonisation of protection criteria and the establishment of cooperation with transit and host countries such as Pakistan, Turkey or Iran.”
