Following the 0-0 draw between England and Scotland on Friday night, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon took to Twitter to praise the Tartan Army’s footballing efforts. But the SNP leader received a fierce backlash for appearing to praise the ‘boogieing’ Scotland fans despite the mass flouting of covid rules. Her comments come as an estimated 30,000 Scots piled into London to cheer on Scotland in their second group stage match against England. Jubilant scenes were recorded as thousands packed into Leicester Square and Hyde Park. The celebrations came despite tough covid rules North of the border as the Scottish government have failed to condemn the scenes despite the previous condemnation of Rangers celebrations back in March.

Following the result, Ms Sturgeon tweeted: “Yes, sir, you all boogied.”

Her tweet was accompanied by a picture of Scotland’s starting eleven.

But Twitter erupted in fury at the First Minister’s comments, calling her out for double standards and a lack of condemnation for the Scots breaching her strict covid restrictions which are in place North of the border.

Many questioned why she praised the celebrations and did not condemn the crowds for breaching Scottish covid restrictions which advise against travel to areas with high infection rates.

Scotland held England to a 0-0 draw at Wembley on Friday as Gareth Southgate’s men failed to put the ball in the net.

Only 22,500 fans were in attendance for the clash due to covid restrictions at the national stadium which can normally hold up to 90,000 spectators.

But while only 2,900 tickets were made available for Scottish supporters thousands travelled down from Scotland to soak up the atmosphere.

Official bodies warned against a mass exodus of fans to London following rising infection rates of covid across the UK amid an extension of covid restrictions to July 19th.
