A bodybuilder has been found dead after mysteriously drowning during a fishing trip.

Catalin Stefanescu was just 30 years old when he was discovered lying three feet deep in a lake in Dambovita County, Romania, on Sunday (July 9), local news outlet Targoviste News reports.

Stefanescu, a former national champion in the 80kg weight category, is thought to have been on the trip with a pal when the tragic incident occurred.

The accompanying friend reportedly made a brief trip home before coming back to the site and finding his friend unconscious in the water.

An ambulance was called but medical staff were unable to save his life and sadly Stefanescu was pronounced dead at the scene.

Representatives from the Dambovita County Police announced they are investigating the circumstances around the muscleman's death and said in a statement: "The police were notified by the administrator of a lake about a deceased person.

"Upon arrival at the scene, the police found that a 30-year-old man, while fishing on a lake in Lazuri, had been found drowned.

"Investigations are underway to establish precisely all the circumstances of the event."

Authorities believe the athlete may have suffered a sudden illness prior to his death.

Stefanescu became a national bodybuilding legend after he came first in the 80kg weight category at the National Fitness and Bodybuilding Championship in Romania.

He also represented his country in the Classic Bodybuilding over 180 cm category.

At the time of his death, the sportsman was working as a trainer in his home city of Targoviste in southern Romania, 80km northwest of the capital, Bucharest.

Stefanescu leaves behind a wife and a daughter.

Tributes have now flooded in for the fitness fanatic, with one person – quoted by Targoviste News – stating: "Our little one, kind and gentle, you tore our souls apart. We were waiting to say Happy Birthday in a week [and] now we mourn you. Your sun set too early."

Another chimed in: "RIP. God rest in peace my good coach! I will never forget you. You left too soon leaving behind only sadness and pain."

Another wrote in tribute: "Smooth road to Heaven, champion. You were and will remain a legend in our souls."
