A former British army officer has fanned the flames of a potential World War Three by warning Britian could soon be at war with Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, General Sir Richard Shirreff said that "we as a nation could be at war with Russia, because if Russia puts one bootstep across Nato territory".

After carrying out his brutal invasion this morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a chilling warning to any country that tried to intervene.

In a sinister statement, Putin warned other countries that any attempt to interfere with the Russian action would lead them to "face consequences greater than any they have faced in history".

However, it seems Western allies of Ukraine are unlikely to abandon the war-torn country to the Russian invasion.

General Sir Richard Shirreff affirmed that the situation would be monitored closely and if needed, direct action taken.

He said: "There is no surprise and there is profound sadness and a sense of appalling horror at what is about to unfold for the people of Ukraine.

“And I think we have to assume that this is not Russia biting off a chunk of Ukraine – for example, establishing a land corridor in Crimea – but a full-blown military offensive to occupy Ukraine.

"There is a possibility that we as a nation could be at war with Russia, because if Russia puts one bootstep across Nato territory, we are all at war with Russia. Every single one, every single member of the Nato alliance.

“Article 5 (of the Nato alliance) says an attack on one is an attack on all, so we need to change our mindset fundamentally, and that is why I say our defence starts in the UK on the frontiers of Nato.”

In response to the situation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson chaired an emergency Cobra meeting at 7.30 am this morning (February 24).

He is set to address the nation at 5pm this evening where the full UK response to the ongoing crisis will be outlined.
