Donald Trump drops hundreds of places on Forbes billionaire list

Donald Trump's Make America Great Again campaign appears to have taken a toll on the former president's finances, causing him to drop hundreds of places on Forbes billionaire list.

Trump now ranks No 1,299 on Forbes’ list of billionaires, down from No.1001 in 2017.

According to the publication, Trump’s net worth dropped from $3.5 billion when he took office in 2017 to $2.4 billion in 2021.

While in office, he kept his business empire, placing temporary control in the hands of Don Jr., Eric Trump and an executive at the Trump Organisation.

The valuation is an estimate due to fluctuations in the property market and because Trump refused to release his tax returns while in office.

Forbes' total does however match an estimate by the Bloomberg Business Index, which said Trump has a wealth of $2.3bn.

During his time as the president of the United States, Trump forewent the presidential salary of $400,000, choosing to donate it instead.

The drop can be attributed to a plummet in value of the $217 million Fifth Avenue retail space, and a $195m drop at 40 Wall Street.
