Elon Musk launching DOGE-1 Moon satellite in bid to be ‘first meme in space’

Elon Musk has announced he is launching a satellite to the Moon called DOGE-1.

The eccentric tech billionaire said it will be the "first meme in the space" as it'll be paid in a joke digital currency Dogecoin.

SpaceX founder and Tesla chief Musk tweeted: "SpaceX launching satellite Doge-1 to the moon next year – Mission paid for in Doge – 1st crypto in space – 1st meme in space To the mooooonnn!!"

The vice president of commercial sales for SpaceX Tom Ochinero added: "We’re excited to launch DOGE-1 to the Moon!"

It comes after the 49-year-old South African told the world the cryptocurrency was a "hustle" as he hosted Saturday Night Live.

His joke about the digital currency saw its value plunge by 28% during the US comedy sketch show.

Musk has repeatedly backed the digital currency, which started off as a parody of Bitcoin – describing himself as the "Dogefather" to his massive Twitter following.

Verge on Sunday reported SpaceX was now accepting Dogecoin to launch DOGE-1 to the Moon.

The miniature satellite will reportedly gather "lunar-spatial intelligence" with onboard cameras and sensors.
