A woman who poisoned her six-month-old baby in a sick bid to get her ex-boyfriend’s attention has been jailed for five years.
The woman, whose name has been withheld by Australian prosecutors, was sentenced on Friday after pleading guilty to two counts of administering poison with intent to harm.
The court heard how the little girl was “comatose” when she was admitted to Logan Hospital in Queensland, Australia.
But doctors noted that the child’s mother, who was in her twenties, seemed ”unconcerned” about her baby’s condition.
Crown prosecutor Stephen Muir told the court that the woman “told lies to medical staff,” concealing the fact that one of her other children had been prescribed Ritalin for ADHD.
Police impounded the mother's phone, revealing that she had set up a Facebook profile detailing her daughter’s condition with the specific goal of getting her ex’s attention, uploading pictures of her as she lay in the intensive care ward.
The baby’s symptoms and agitated condition were consistent with Ritalin poisoning, reports the Courier Mail.
Doctors managed to stabilise the baby girl’s condition and on May 28 this year she was discharged from hospital.
However within days she again began to show the symptoms of rapid heart rate, twitching limbs and insomnia associated with the drug.
The baby was readmitted to the intensive care ward and the woman was arrested on May 31.
The child has since made a full recovery.
Judge Craig Chowdhury told the defendant she was 'very lucky' she didn't kill her baby. He added that her young age, lack of previous criminal offences and desire for rehabilitation moved him to impose a comparatively light sentence.
The young woman will be eligible for parole in 12 months.
