The murderer needed emergency treatment for a broken hip, and was placed under constant guard in a Scottish NHS facility.
Tobin was also diagnosed with cancer in 2019.
While he was convicted of three murders, the monster was suspected of dozens more killings.
In prison, Tobin boasted to fellow lags of having murdered a total of 48 people. and families of potential victims had begged him to tell the truth about what happened to their loved ones before he died.
Nicola Stork, whose teenage sister Louise Kay disappeared from Eastbourne in 1988 and is strongly believed to be another of Tobin's victims, said in September: "I don't want Tobin to die because it means we might never know but I've got no sympathy if he's in pain.
"If he dies without giving us information about Louise, then it probably means we'll never know what happened to her or where she is.
"I hope he will confess something or the police can go and speak to him to get it out of him."

Retired detective superintendent David Swindle, who led the team that caught Tobin, said that that Tobin would have given up his secrets if there was "any humanity there".
Even before his first murder conviction, Tobin had served ten years in prison for a double rape committed in 1993. Three years after his release, he was sentenced to life with a minimum of twenty-one years for the rape and murder of Angelika Kluk in Glasgow in 2006.
