Finland, like Ukraine, has long endured a tense relationship with Russia – both as part of the Swedish Kingdom and as an independent nation during the world wars. And now, after decades of neutrality, Finland is applying to join NATO alongside Sweden. Amid fears that being isolated could leave the country vulnerable to Russian aggression, Finns hope NATO membership will guarantee their security. But Finnish MEP Nils Torvalds told Times Radio this week that his country would be able to defend itself even better than Ukraine has, dismissing the threat of Putin’s forces.
