Melania Trump sends personalised coronavirus ‘care packages’ to US hospitals

The First Lady’s packages were delivered to hospitals in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Delaware and the District of Columbia. In a statement Mrs Trump said: “The medical community has gone above and beyond to protect the health of the American people.”

Each package contained items focused on supporting younger patients including blankets, caps, pencils, backpacks, stickers and children’s books.

Mrs Trump said they are “just a small token of my appreciation for their courage and leadership”.

On Friday the First Lady took to Twitter to express her solidarity with the American people suffering from the coronavirus outbreak.

She said: “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with each person suffering and fighting to recover from this terrible virus, and with all of the families who have lost loved ones.

“Even though we are physically apart, we are all in this fight together.”

However, the First Lady received a backlash from social media users.

One user from Los Angeles, California replied: “Actually, we are NOT all in this together.”

This comes a week after the First Lady praised shop workers, power plant employees and “those delivering mail and packages”.

Mrs Trump posted on Twitter: “We salute essential workers in the health care industry who are fighting to save lives.

“We thank those who put themselves at risk to keep our grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations open.

“Those who ensure that our power plants and factories are up and running.”

Earlier this month, the First Lady posted a video of herself encouraging people to wear face masks.

She was recommending Americans wear face coverings in public, sharing a video of herself delivering the message on Instagram.

Mrs Trump posted: “As the CDC continues to study the spread of Covid-19, they recommend people wear cloth face coverings in public settings where social distancing measures can be difficult to maintain.

“Remember, this does not replace the importance of social distancing.”

This post was met with support from social media users.

One social media user said: “So stunning. A true class act.”

While another user posted: “Please stay safe and well, Ms Trump. Our prayers are with you and the President.”

Mrs Trump’s message on face masks came as the President of the United States said he didn’t think he would wear one in public.

Donald Trump said: “I don’t think I’m going to be doing it, wearing a face mask as I greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens – I just don’t see it.”

The US has the highest number of recorded cases in the world with over 894,000.

There are over 50,900 confirmed coronavirus deaths in the US.
