Murder suspects mom arrested in Jefferson County as an accessor in sons case

The mother of a murder suspect in Jefferson County has been arrested as an accessor in her son’s case.

Theresa Rino, 66, was arrested Friday on a warrant for accessory to crime (a class 5 felony), attempt to commit tampering with physical evidence, and conspiracy to commit tampering with physical evidence, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Her bond has been set at $5,000.

On Sept. 24, Scott Smith, 46, was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and domestic violence for the Nov. 1, 2020, shooting death of his wife, 48-year-old Kanokwan Smith.

Rino was identified Friday by the sheriff’s office, in a news release, as Scott Smith’s mother.

Scott Smith’s preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 16.
