Typhoon jets have been scrambled to respond to “unidentified aircraft” approaching the United Kingdom, the Royal Air Force has confirmed.

The jets, which were launched from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland, have been joined by a Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

An RAF spokesman declined to provide further detail on the operation until it is over.

There has been an unconfirmed reports that the aircraft is a Tu-160 and that their were three seen around the UK.

The Russian Ministry of Defence is yet to publish an official statement on the incident following the reports.

Reports also suggest an F-16 NATO also intercepted as they headed in the direction of the Norwegian sea.

An RAF Spokesperson said: "“Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighters from RAF Lossiemouth, supported by a Voyager Tanker from RAF Brize Norton, have been launched against unidentified aircraft approaching the UK area of interest. We will not be offering any additional detail on this ongoing operation until complete”

The RAF routinely intercepts aircraft approaching what it describes as the “UK area of interest.”

In November 2021, jets were launched in response to Russian TU-160 Blackjack strategic bombers.

Officials said at the time the fighters escorted the Russian aircraft out of the “area of interest”, and that the bombers did not enter UK airspace.
