A sickening paedophile who prayed on children for years has been jailed for 50 years for raping, burning and strangling a nine-year-old girl in a crime that shook Brazil.
Carlos Eduardo dos Santos lured his victim off the street in 2008 after she finished school for the day by pretending to be a children's TV producer.
He convinced little Rachel Genofre to go back to the house he was staying in. When they arrived he raped her, assaulted her, burned her with a cigarette, and then strangled her.
He then wrapped her body in sheets, put it in a suitcase and dumped it at Curitiba Bus Station.
It was found by two homeless men. The station's CCTV was not working at the time meaning Santos got away with it at the time.
The crime shocked the entire nation and police hunted for the killer for 11 years. Dos Santos was only identified as a suspect after police carried out DNA cross-checks in 2019. Dos Santos had already been in prison since 2016, serving a 22-year sentence for other crimes including the rape of a young boy.
A court in the Brazilian municipality of Curitiba found him guilty by four votes to one and sentenced him to 40 years in prison for homicide, and 10 years for indecent assault.

After the verdict, the victim's family's lawyer, Daniel da Costa Gaspar, said: "The 12th of May, 2021, will go down in the history of Parana and Brazilian society as the day justice was finally served in one of the most barbaric cases of murder and violence against children in our history."
According to the police, Dos Santos had been committing vile crimes for more than three decades, his first sickening attack being the sexual assault of a four-year-old girl in Sao Vicente in July 1985.
He is believed to have committed at least six counts of rape against children aged 4 to 14.
During the 11 years that elapsed between the crime and the suspect's identification, the police carried out over 200 DNA tests and arrested numerous men in a desperate attempt to track down the killer.
