Hundreds of people have heard a "sonic boom" that caused "ground shakes" in Leicester this afternoon after a big explosion.

Some residents have suggested that a sonic boom may have caused the massive shakes and explosion, which was so loud that some North Leicester residents said it had "rocked the house".

The explosion reached as far as North Oxfordshire, where some residents described a "massive bang" that stretched all the way to Northampton.

Sonic booms tend to come from an object that travels faster than the speed of sound.

The recent explosion in Leicester has not yet been identified, but the potential involvement of a military jet was aired by reports from LeicestershireLive.

One resident described the boom, saying: "Very loud boom in Leicester about 15 mins ago. Felt the air shake – cats scared and ran indoors Very unnerving – what the hell was it?"

Another said: "Heard and felt a big explosion in Leicester just now. Saw some suggesting a sonic boom?"

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire Control said that the most likely cause for the sonic boom was that of a plane breaking the sound barrier.

They said: "We thought it was a large lorry going past at first. It was also felt in Melton and at Market Harborough, so that wouldn't suggest it was anything happening on the ground to be concerned about."
