A plane was spotted shooting sparks off its engine and dropping debris to the ground as people watched on in terror.

The United Airlines flight was scheduled to take off from Newark Liberty International Airport at New Jersey, US, to Sao Paulo in Brazil on Wednesday (September 21).

As the Boeing 777 departed at around 11.24pm, aviation photographer Murt recorded the moment a trail of sparks come off from the left side of the plane.

"Oh! Oh my God!" Murt can be heard screaming at the top of his lungs.

Some debris appeared to have dropped on the runway as the plane was airborne.

The UA149 flight continued to fly for about an hour and a half before the pilot made a U-turn and landed back at the Newark Airport.

Initial investigations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) suggested that the problem was related to a hydraulic pressure pump failure.

A spokesperson for United Airlines said: "After our aircraft experienced a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff, it remained in the air to burn fuel and then landed safely.

"Passengers deplaned at the gate and a new aircraft is scheduled to depart this morning (September 22)."

Viewers were relieved to know all 256 passengers were safe after the plane experienced trouble mid-air.

One said: "If I had been on that plane, oh my God I would’ve passed out from panic!"

Another shared: "Sparks are from the left wing, there are lights in both wheel wells which is what your seeing in the right wheel well – perfectly normal.

"What's not normal is the constant problems from United. Nobody else has problems with a 777 so it seems to be an airline issue not a plane one."

"The plane: Keeps flying. The man with camera: OHHHHH NOOOOOOOO!" a third teased.
