Super recogniser shares what Madeleine McCann would look like today

An unhappy anniversary is being marked in the case of the disappearance of 3-year-old Madeleine McCann.

On May 3, 2007, Madeleine went missing from a rented apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Her disappearance sparked a huge search for her and years of media coverage.

The search for her is expected to be wound up later this year, 15 years later, according to reports.

Her tragic disappearance and worldwide fame means that there are plenty of people wondering what she would look like today, though it is not known if she is alive or dead.

German prosecutors believe Maddie to be dead and Portuguese authorities only recently made paedophile Christian Brueckner an 'arguido', or suspect.

Brueckner has denied involvement in Maddie's disappearance but is expected to be charged later this year, according to The Mirror.

As Madeleine McCann is still missing, it is impossible to know what she would look like now.

However, ex-NHS worker and "super recogniser" Simone Malik has drawn up her own sketch of what Maddie might look like now, aged 18.

Using genetics and a natural facial recognition "gift" to produce pictures, she believes Madeleine would have the same nose as her aunt.

She said: "Usually, children are like their mother or their father, or a bit of both, but neither does her mother or father have the wide nose and square tip.

"I decided to do a bit more digging, and as I did some digging, I found a very interesting fact: somebody with exactly that nose in her family.

"And it's actually Philomena McCann, who is Gerry McCann's sister, so it would be Madeleine's aunty, from her dad's side."

An official update was released of what Maddie might look like in 2012, and the picture was formally introduced by Kate and Gerry McCann.

At the time, Scotland Yard's Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, said: "We genuinely believe there's a possibility that she is alive."

She went missing when parents Kate and Gerry were dining with friends at a nearby tapas restaurant, before her disappearance was noted.

'Tapas 7' member Dr Fiona Payne, said in a 2008 police interview: ""[Kate] was hysterical, it upsets me very much to even think about how she was.

"She was so terrified, absolutely inconsolable, she was rampaging round…the room, she's up and down, pacing, kicking walls, just on, for most part, just imagining where or what might be happening to Madeleine and angry at herself and then for having left her."

How old would Madeleine McCann be now?

Madeleine McCann would be 18 years old today, approaching her 19th birthday.

Maddie was born on May 12, 2003 and was snatched only nine days before her fourth birthday.

Ahead of her 18th birthday, parents Kate and Gerry said in 2021: "Every May is tough – a reminder of years passed, of years together lost, or stolen. This year it is particularly poignant as we should be celebrating Madeleine’s 18th birthday. Enough said.

"We hang on to the hope, however small, that we will see Madeleine again. As we have said repeatedly, we need to know what has happened to our lovely daughter, no matter what. We are very grateful to the police for their continued efforts."

Mum Kate has also said in a heartbreaking statement: "I do all the present buying. I think about what age she is and buy something that, whenever we find her, will still be appropriate so there’s a lot of thought goes into it."
