Terrifying events that would happen if all nuclear bombs on Earth were detonated

Few things are quite as terrifying to comprehend than the prospect of full-scale Nuclear War.

And while such an eventuality remains unlikely and difficult to imagine in the modern day, with around 15,000 nuclear weapons on Earth, it is seemingly something the global public are intrigued by.

YouTube channel 'Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell' have said as much previously, after revealing they received numerous questions asking them what would happen if all the nuclear weapons on the planet were detonated at the same time.

The popular channel then did what it does best and sought to find the answer, calling on various scientists to get to the bottom of it – and the findings are not for the feint-hearted.

According to their research, of the 15,000 weapons said to be on Earth, Russia and the US hold the lion's share of around 7,000 each. The other 1,000 are shared between the UK, France, China, North Korea, Israel, Pakistan and India.

Scarily, Kurzgesagt claim it would take just three of those weapons to wipe out a whole city – or 13,500 nuclear warheads to destroy all of the 4,500 cities on Earth. In doing so, roughly half of the human race – around 3billion people – would be wiped out instantly; and there would still be 1,500 weapons left over…

The YouTubers then configured how the blast would look if all the weapons were centred on one area of the planet, suggesting the explosion would create a fireball 31 miles wide. The blast alone would have even further-reaching consequences, obliterating everything it its wake for 1,865 miles.

Forests would be flattened as the worst wild fires the world has seen would wreak havoc. Not only that, but the explosion would be heard around the world while the pressure waves would circle the Earth tens of times over the weeks that followed.

Kurzgesagt's findings are based on the devastating 1883 eruption of Mount Krakatoa. They state that 15,000 nuclear warheads would contain around three billion tons of TNT, which is 15 times more powerful than Krakatoa.

To make matters worse, millions of tons of incinerated material would be shattered and spread into Earth's atmosphere – with the mushroom cloud of smoke and debris billowing so high it would be touching the outer edge and pushing on the boundaries into space.

The amount of extremely radioactive material would double worldwide and would kill living things rapidly, while making locations hundreds of kilometres downwind uninhabitable.

Still, things would be much worse if the Earth's entire uranium supply was mined and detonated – but we'll spare you the details for another day…
