Heart-stopping footage has shown a plane engine bursting into flames mid-flight as terrified passengers watch on.

The Atlas Air flight, a Boeing 767, was forced to make an emergency landing after catching fire over Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday.

A dramatic video shows the flames on the wing lighting up the pitch-black cabin sporadically.

They appear just outside the window as turbulence grips the aircraft.

The plane had taken off from Hickman Air Force Base and was on its way to Guam but just minutes after take-off, the pilot declared an emergency.

Thankfully, none of the 212 passengers on board were injured.

Such was the ferocity of the inferno, witnesses on the ground reported hearing a loud explosion.

“It was quite loud,” Kevin Tynan, of Makiki, told KHON 2. “I’m pretty sure I heard my neighbours down below talking about it.

“You can hear a lot of people, it was pretty intense for a while there.

“I was nervous because when I first saw it, it was pretty close. I was like oh my gosh,” Kevin added.

Following the incident, Atlas Air released a statement blaming the fire on a “mechanical issue”.

The statement read: “An Atlas Air passenger flight landed safely at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu following a mechanical issue with one engine.

“At Atlas, safety is always our top priority and we will be conducting a thorough inspection to determine the cause.”

The incident remains under investigation.

It comes after heart-stopping footage captured a Boeing 777 plane bursting into flames on a runway while loading cargo.
