Three deputies who fired at an armed man, who died in the El Paso County shooting, were identified Thursday as members of the Tactical Support Unit.
The police shooting happened on Sept. 1 in the area of Gollihar Road and Gollihar Court, near Peyton, when the man fired at deputies, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department. CSPD is investigating the shooting.
On Thursday, the sheriff’s office identified the deputies involved as Ryan Gonzales, David Fisher and Andrew Peery. Gonzales has been with the sheriff’s office since 2007, Fisher since 2014 and Peery since 2016. The deputies are on administrative leave per sheriff’s office policy.
Deputies and the sheriff’s Behavioral Health Connect Unit, which includes a licensed health clinician, contacted a “suicidal” man in the area, police said at the time of the incident. The man was first found in an open field and then went to a wooded ridgeline overlooking deputies. Attempts to deescalate the situation were made by phone calls over several hours.
“During these attempts, he fired his weapon at least one time at deputies,” police said earlier. Deputies returned fire. The man died at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
