Two arrested in Lakewood standoff suspected of armed robbery

Two armed robbery suspects were arrested in Lakewood Tuesday afternoon after a residential standoff near the busy intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, police said.

The incident unfolded about 9:20 a.m. at Champion Liquor & Wine, 6111 West Colfax Ave., according to the Lakewood Police Department.

A couple of suspects “robbed several bottles of liquor at gunpoint,” said John Romero, a police spokesman. Several people outside the store during the incident fled on foot along with the suspects.

Police traced suspects to a townhome in the 1600 block of Depew Street, Romero said. The department’s SWAT team was called out and about 10 a.m. a shelter in place notification was made to nearby residents.

One suspect inside the townhome surrendered at 12:34 p.m. and a second suspect three minutes later, Romero said. The scene at the townhome was cleared about 1:30 p.m. Police believe one of the suspects resides at the townhome.

The suspects, who were the only two people inside the residence, were held for investigation of armed robbery. No shots were fired. Romero could not say whether a gun was recovered. An investigation is ongoing.
