UK town forced to leave Christmas tree undecorated to stop Grinch vandals

A shopping centre's management have opted against decorating their Christmas tree due to "Grinches" vandalising it.

The naked tree, found in Coalville’s Belvoir Shopping Centre, is bare and has been branded "pathetic" and "embarrassing" by members of the public in the Leicestershire town.

The tree was installed by the owners of the shopping centre, Gylo, late last month, with residents expecting decorations to appear in the days following its arrival.

However, no tinsel, baubles or lights have adorned the tree, leaving many disappointed, as reported by Leicestershire Live.

A discussion on the shopping centre tree sparked hundreds of comments online this week, and some called the situation “embarrassing”.

“It's embarrassing,” said one person. “It’s sad. It’s a lovely shaped tree,” said a second. “Pathetic isn't it!” echoed a third.

A few decorations have since been added by members of the public, but the tree remains largely bare. Many of those online considered the reasons behind this, with several pointing to the open nature of the shopping centre since Gylo’s acquisition and redevelopment of the area.

“Trouble now is the centre is open 24/7 so I’d doubt it would stay decorated for long,” suggested one person. “If they put nice things on it somebody's will come along and spoil as usual,” remarked another.

“What's the point? They will be stolen in five minutes,” said a third. A fourth said: “The fact that it can't be decorated because people will nick the baubles speaks volumes.”

The real reason for the undecorated tree and whether it is linked to crime is unknown.

People pointed out that the tree is in stark contrast to one erected by North West Leicestershire District Council near Coalville’s Clock Tower, which is decorated and lit up.
