The Princess of Wales has released an unseen photograph of the late Queen Elizabeth II on what would have been her 97th birthday.

The loving photo, taken by Kate Middleton, shows her with some of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

It was snapped at the Queen's Balmoral estate in Scotland last summer.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte can be seen grinning from ear-to-ear standing behind Her Majesty.

Prince Louis, Kate and Prince William's youngest child, is stood to the Queen's left sporting a similarly cheesy smile.

Both of the boys are wearing smart collared shirts with their top couple of buttons undone. Charlotte appears in a summery floral dress.

Also there is Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, James, Earl of Wessex, Lena Tindall, Isla Phillips, Mia Tindall, Lucas Tindall and Savannah Phillips.

The Queen appears bang in the middle of the lot of them with a blanket over her legs.

The picture was taken in August, poignantly just a few weeks before Britain's longest reigning monarch passed away aged 96.

It was shared from the Kensington Palace official Twitter account alongside the caption: "Today would have been Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 97th birthday.

"This photograph – showing her with some of her grandchildren and great grandchildren – was taken at Balmoral last summer."

Earlier today the the Royal Family paid tribute to the Queen. Sharing an image of the Queen on Instagram, Buckingham Palace wrote: "Today we remember the incredible life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on what would have been her 97th birthday."
