A top ISIS leader has been killed by US special forces in Syria.

Rakan Abu (Hayel) Hail was killed in the Qamishli region, near the Turkish border.

According to sources in the region: "During the op another guy was with Abu Hayil got arrested, while Abu Hayil resisted and got killed."

And Syria's state broadcaster comment on the matter overnight.

A spokesman said "'US occupation forces carried out a landing operation using several helicopters in the village of Muluk Saray in the southern countryside of Qamishli and killed one person."

Local media has already been classing Abu Hayel as a "little-known displaced person" from the Hassakeh region, but it is thought that he was actually a top ISIS leader.

US Central Command spokesman Colonel Joseph Buccino confirmed to Reuters that US forces were involved in a dawn raid that targeted an ISIS operative, but gave no other details.

Rakan Abu Hail's exact role in ISIS is unknown, as he appeared to be one of the less-known leaders to the outside world, but several other militants and allies of his and Syria President Bashar Al-Assad are also thought to have been capture by US forces.

Local news sources claimed that "loud speakers" were used to warn residents to stay indoors during the midnight raid, which involved three helicopters filled with United States troops.

It is thought to be the first time that the US has completed a mission such as this in regime-held areas.

No official comment has been made by United States President Joe Biden, but earlier this year he did state that he would be launching tougher attacks on the infamous terror group – and it now appears that he is following through with his promise to eliminate the terrorist organisation with targeted strikes against many of its murderous leaders.
