Weird reason Prince William and Prince Harrys children have different surnames

Ever wondered why Prince William’s three children don’t share the same surnames as Prince Harry's offspring and why the latter’s kids don’t have titles?

In normal society, when two brothers both have children, they naturally have the same last name, but they do things rather differently in royal circles, even to the point where surnames change for each generation.

It is probably well known that Harry’s two children, Archie and Lilibet, are Mountbatten-Windsors, but did you know that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have Cambridge as their last name?

They all take the Cambridge name after their father’s title, the Duke of Cambridge.

But why aren’t Harry’s children known as Archie Sussex and Lilibet Sussex, given their dad is Duke of Sussex?

Well, according to the Royal Family’s official website, a declaration made by the Queen in Privy Council in 1960 said that male-line descendants of the monarch, without royal styles and titles, shall bear the name Mountbatten-Windsor.

When Harry and Meghan’s son Archie was born in May 2019, Buckingham Palace announced that the royal tot had not been issued with a title and would be known as Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor – a nod to his great-grandparents, the Queen and the late Duke of Edinburgh.

In their military careers, William was known as Lieutenant Wales, while Harry had the rank of Captain Wales.

William and Harry were granted new titles from the Queen and their children are expected to take these on.

In a similar vein, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice both use the surname York after their father Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.
