Weld County deputy resigns after being charged with stalking and harassment, DA says

A former Weld County deputy was charged with one count of felony stalking and two misdemeanor harassment charges, according to a release Thursday from the Weld County District Attorney’s Office.

John Maedel was arrested on April 14 by Greeley Police and booked into the Weld County jail. The Weld County Sheriff’s Office asked Greeley police to look into Maedel upon learning about a protection order filed against him, the office said in a release.

Maedel submitted his resignation to the office Wednesday “in lieu of a termination,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office has an ongoing internal investigation into Maedel, who was hired in 2016 and was most recently working as a detective with the investigations unit.

Maedel will have a court hearing on June 13.
