Prince William regrets the conversation he had with his brother following the announcement of Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle, a royal commentator has claimed.
Things moved swiftly for Harry and Meghan after they met in the summer of 2016 and within a year their engagement had been announced.
William publicly issued his support for the couple, but privately he and Harry had a heart-to-heart in which the heir to the throne is believed to have advised his brother to take things slowly.
But Vanity Fair royal correspondent Katie Nicholl said that chat backfired, with Harry taking offence at what his brother told him.
“William probably does have a major regret over the conversation that he had with his brother around the time of the engagement when Harry and Meghan got engaged,” Katie told the Real Royalty YouTube channel.
“When William basically sat down with Harry and urged him to just take his time, not to rush into anything – what was intended as well-meant, brotherly advice didn’t go down with Harry at all.

“Harry felt he didn’t have his brother’s support and that really was the beginning of the breakdown of what was up, until then, an unbreakable brotherly bond.”
Meghan’s lack of experience within the Royal Family was reportedly the factor behind William’s plea to take things easy, but Harry supposedly interpreted it as being a lack of support from his older brother.
It was the start of a deterioration in their relationship which has reached a new low this year following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s move to the United States and several high-profile media appearances in which they’ve laid bare their issues with the rest of the Royal Family.
Harry and Meghan gave an eye-opening tell-all interview to Oprah Winfrey in March. In it, Harry spoke about his strained relationship with William, and described their current situation as “space”.
He said his brother was "trapped" within the institution and that they were "on a different path".
There have been a couple of subsequent reunions for the brothers. The pair were united in grief at the funeral of their grandfather Prince Philip and Harry also flew back to the UK for the recent unveiling of a statue of their mum, Princess Diana.
But behind closed doors, it’s believed that reconciliation talks between the dukes have yet to bear fruit.
