Get the biggest stories and wackiest takes from the Daily Star, including our special WTF Wednesday email<\/p>\n<p>We have more newsletters<\/p>\n<p>Russian spacecraft Luna-25 has crashed into the moon, Roscosmos has confirmed following worries over an &quot;abnormal situation&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>The unmanned robot lander was launched earlier this month and has since crashed into the surface of the moon after spinning into an uncontrolled orbit.<\/p>\n<p> Roscosmos representatives say they lost contact with the satellite shortly after a craft-related problem which led to an &quot;unpredictable orbit&quot;.<\/p>\n<p><b>READ MORE: NASA&apos;s top boffins want help from public to study Uranus &#8211; you only need 16 inches<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the space agency has since confirmed the disastrous crash, with the satellite&apos;s intended use of collecting moon rock samples now impossible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article30744866.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/1_Screenshot-2023-08-20-at-101232.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Russia had hoped to land the satellite on the moon tomorrow (Monday, August 21), but had confirmed some flight-path problems earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>A Roscosmos spokesperson said: &quot;The apparatus moved into an unpredictable orbit and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the surface of the moon.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Luna-25&apos;s crash into the moon comes as a technical glitch with the rocket was experienced during a pre-landing orbit on Sunday, August 20. <\/p>\n<p>The spacecraft was charting a region on the moon&apos;s south pole, with scientists believing the area could hold frozen water and precious elements.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article30744868.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_JS307833307.jpg\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure data-mod=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article30744459.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s458\/0_DDP_CHP__4209Kaylee-Muthart-JPG.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<p> Woman who &apos;gouged out her own eyes&apos; shares horror details of why she did it<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s2-prod.mirror.co.uk\/@trinitymirrordigital\/chameleon-branding\/publications\/dailystar\/img\/logo-schema-dailystar.png\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Russia&apos;s first moon mission in almost 50 years has ended in disastrous circumstances, with the space agency losing contact with Luna-25 after running into difficulties earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>The unmanned craft had been set to make a soft landing to collect samples of rock and dust in the moon&apos;s south pole.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are particularly interested in the moon&apos;s south pole due to the polar craters which may hold water due to the permanently shadowed area.<\/p>\n<p>The frozen water in the rocks could be transformed by future explorers into air and rocket fuel.<\/p>\n<p><b>This is a breaking news story and is being constantly updated.
