Two young men have been arrested after a shooting near a crowded park that compelled the evacuation of schools in the high plains town of Bennett, east of metro Denver, Adams County Sheriff officials said Wednesday morning.

Families with children playing soccer were gathered in Trupp Park Tuesday afternoon when the gunshots reverberated. One of the shooters was over 18, the other just under 18, and nobody was hurt, authorities said.

Deputies went to an area near Trupp Park and found multiple bullet shell casings, said Sgt. Adam Sherman, spokesman for the sheriff’s department. The deputies took the two men into custody.

“We had a ton of witnesses. There was a soccer practice going on in the park. There were a whole lot of families there. We were able to collect shell casings. Nothing was hit,” Sherman said.

Bennett school officials placed students who were participating in extracurricular activities at Bennett Elementary on lockdown as a precaution after residents reported hearing gunshots. Students later were shuttled by deputies to the nearby Bennett High School where they were reunited with their families, officials said.

Investigators conducting interviews of the two men were trying to determine whether a dispute had led to the shooting and other details of what happened, Sherman said. No victims were found, and officials were mulling what charges may be filed.

School classes and extracurricular activities on Wednesday were canceled, school officials announced on Tuesday evening in an online posting to parents.
