A teenager was left stunned when he checked his bank balance to find out that he’d become a multi-millionaire.

Dane Gillespie, 18, was left baffled as he had not won the lottery but simply paid an £8,900 cheque from his gran into his account.

But the system at Nationwide Building Society misread the details and credited his account with a whopping £8.9million – 1,000 times more money than it should have done.

His mum Caroline, from Belfast, was as shocked as she was pinged a screenshot of his “balance”, reports the Mirror.

“We couldn’t believe it. My son thought he was a millionaire for a few hours,” she said.

“There was £8.9million in his account on Wednesday morning. It’s as well he told us and didn’t go and blow it all.”

Caroline added: “I said to him, ‘That cheque should be cleared in your savings’, and he went, ‘Right’.

“The next minute my husband messaged me with the photograph of his bank account details.

“He’s going to me, ‘I’m gonna order a Porsche’, and I said, ‘Don’t be daft, that’s not our money, we need to get this sorted’.”

It’s a good job Dane heeded his mum’s advice, because it wasn’t long before Nationwide spotted the error, and his account was adjusted.

But the Belfast Met student can always say he was once a multi-millionaire.

“It was like that for a good few hours,” said Caroline.

“For an 18-year-old being a millionaire for the day, he just can’t believe it.

“He just wanted to go out and spend, but if you do then you have to pay it back.

“He thought all his birthdays came at once this morning. It’s mad.”
