POLL: Do you back David Camerons return to the cabinet as foreign secretary?

David Cameron is back in the world of frontline politics after he was this morning made foreign secretary as part of Rishi Sunak’s cabinet reshuffle.

A statement from No. 10 this morning confirmed: “The King has been pleased to approve the appointment of the Rt Hon David Cameron as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs”.

To enable him to take up the position, he will take a seat in the House of Lords with the No. 10 statement confirming: “His Majesty has also been pleased to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom for life upon David Cameron.”

Mr Cameron served as Prime Minister from 2005 to 2016. He resigned following the success of the Leave vote in the 2016 EU referendum.

His appointment has shocked many, as the former PM has been very outspoken when it comes to several Government policies.

Just last month he hit back at Mr Sunak’s decision to cut HS2’s Manchester branch.

In response to his new role, Mr Cameron said he “gladly accepted” the job and laid out the “daunting set of international challenges” facing the UK.

He said: “While I have been out of front-line politics for the last seven years, I hope that my experience โ€“ as Conservative Leader for eleven years and Prime Minister for six โ€“ will assist me in helping the Prime Minister to meet these vital challenges.”

Mr Cameron said he “may have disagreed with some individual decisions” made by Mr Sunak, but called him “a strong and capable Prime Minister, who is showing exemplary leadership at a difficult time.”

He pledged to “help him to deliver the security and prosperity our country needs and be part of the strongest possible team that serves the United Kingdom and that can be presented to the country when the General Election is held.”

However, the appointment has causes furore on X (formally Twitter). X user @will_je_suis wrote: “Disastrous decision. #GeneralElectionN0W”. While user @fioremjm said: “It’s not April fool’s today” and @cerieds said: “Disgrace I’m a conservative voter NEVER again whilst Sunak in charge”.
