Britons have been warned to wrap up warm as freezing temperatures are expected as an Arctic freeze sweeps across the nation.
Scotland may even see snow and sleet fall among the higher areas this coming weekend, while sub-zero temperatures are expected to cover the rest of the country.
Friday night will see the mercury plummeting to -4C in Wales and -5C in the rural South West, metereologists say.
However, Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern says snow becomes increasingly more unlikely the further south of Scotland you live, with “dry and bright” conditions for the “vast majority”.
It will, however, fall in Scotland on peaks higher than 400 metres, the weather agency reports.

For most of the day on Saturday, temperatures are expected to remain below double digits.
Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: “By the end of the week we are going to see cold winds arrive from the north.
“It’s going to feel colder this week and there will be some snow showers over, mainly, hills of northern Scotland.
“But elsewhere, with high pressure in place, it is going to be mostly dry on Friday and into the start of the weekend.”
He said Friday would be a “chillier” day, with the wind bringing showers to northern Scotland and parts of North Wales.
Sky News weather producer Chris England said the Arctic air will spread to most of Britain over the next couple of days, “bringing very strong winds and a scattering of hail and snow showers to the north and east”.
A Met Office spokesman said the cold and variable weather is to be expected at this time of year, with the weather only needing “a quick change from a southern wind into a north wind” to see further frosts.

“Nagging winds” are also hitting the north-east of the UK.
These are forecasted to cause high waves, as well as pose challenges to lorries over the weekend.
The winds are not as severe further south, and will primarily impact the east of the country down to Norfolk.
